Modern computers are increasingly required to interact with networks, be those the protected networks of the workplace or home or the less safe network of the Internet. Unfortunately, not everyone connected to networks has your best interest at heart. If you have ever monitored a firewall connected to the Internet, you will have noticed that scans and probes wash up against it like waves on a beach. A lot of people out there would love to take control of your computer, and they constantly run scans against known Internet service provider (ISP) address ranges looking for new computers to take over. The firewall that ships with Windows Vista is designed to keep your computer secure in the anarchic maelstrom that is the public Internet. It will not protect you if you open an e-mail containing a virus, but it will act as a wall, stopping those on the outside from getting in.

The HTTP filter is initially configured with defaults that help ensure secure HTTP access. However, depending on the specific deployment scenario, these options should be customized.

HTTP filters are applied on a per-rule basis. To configure the HTTP filters on a particular access rule or Web publishing rule, modify the HTTP policy for that rule.

A firewall restricts network traffic on the basis of a set of configurable rules. The Windows Firewall is present by default on all of a computer s network interfaces. Firewalls work in the following way: when traffic reaches the interface, the firewall analyzes it, either dropping the traffic or allowing it past on the basis of the configured rules. Windows Vista uses two firewalls that work in concert, the Windows Firewall and Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. The primary difference between them is the complexity of the rules that they use in determining whether to let network traffic cross the interface that they protect. What makes the Windows Vista Firewall different from the one that was included with Windows XP is that it functions in a bidirectional manner. The Windows XP firewall worked only on network traffic coming toward the computer from the network. If you think of a firewall as a gate on a road, the Windows XP firewall would allow in only traffic that met a set of rules, but it would let all traffic out without any checks. The Windows Vista Firewall applies rules to traffic in both directions. Unless there is a rule that grants an exemption, any traffic that Windows Vista transmits to the network will be dropped by the firewall, just as incoming traffic will be dropped if no rule exists to allow it to pass. When thinking about active firewalls, always remember that unless a rule exists to allow a particular form of traffic, the firewall drops the traffic. You must explicitly allow traffic to pass

Important The one exception to the per-rule application of the HTTP filter is the Maximum headers length setting on the General tab of the Configure HTTP Policy For Rule dialog box. This setting is applied to all rules globally, which means that if you change it in one rule, it is changed in all rules.

To access the HTTP policy associated with a specific rule, right-click the rule in ISA Server Management Console and select Configure HTTP, as shown in Figure 7-15.
