The demonstration conditions in the following sections are somewhat contrived. Hardcoded values mean the same path is always followed each time the code is run. I could have written each example to accept some runtime variable (an external factor, not determinable at compile time) such that each path could be exercised. While this would add an element of real-world-ness, it would also make the code much longer, without adding any demonstration value. It goes without saying that I consider readers of this book to be intelligent enough to study each example and dry run in their heads how different data would activate the various paths through the code.

It is important for readers who have used the Windows XP version of Remote Assistance to know that the Windows Vista version does not support voice sessions. This means that you will have to use either a separate voice application or a telephone if you want communication between the helper and the host user.

1. The research department in your organization has unique network access requirements. All the computers used by the department users are on a separate subnet that must be isolated from the production environment. The users need unrestricted Internet access. What should you do to facilitate that

Create a new internal network that is defined by the range of IP addresses for the research department subnet. Then define a network rule between the research department network and the Internet and define an access rule that allows full access to the Internet from the research department network.

Windows Vista s default settings enable the sending of Remote Assistance invitations. Assuming that two Windows Vista computers can communicate with each other, the only way that one of them will not be able to request Remote Assistance is if a user with elevated privileges has explicitly disabled this functionality in the past. Of course, creating a Remote Assistance invitation is only the first step; it needs to be transmitted to and opened by the helper. We will cover these issues later in the lesson. As mentioned, only a user who has elevated privileges can configure the setting that allows Remote Assistance invitations to be sent from a computer. Remote Assistance settings can also be configured using Group Policy if the Windows Vista computer is in a domain environment, but that topic is beyond the scope of the 70-620 exam. To enable a computer to receive Remote Assistance connections, perform the following steps: 1. Click Start, right-click Computer, and click Properties. 2. In the Tasks pane, click Remote Settings. 3. Click Continue to close the User Account Control dialog box. 4. In the Remote tab of the System Properties dialog box, ensure that the Allow Remote Assistance Connections To This Computer check box is selected, as shown in Figure 8-13.

Only a user with elevated privileges is able to configure the security settings involved in Remote Assistance. Three security options apply to Remote Assistance invitations issued from computers running Windows Vista. These settings control:
